3 Ways to Recognize Employees for Their Anniversary

According to Tony Robbins, world authority on leadership psychology, humans have six needs: certainty, variety, significance, connection/love, growth and contribution. As an employer, it may not be realistic to serve all six needs, but you can and should serve this basic need for significance.

Significance means feeling unique, important, special or needed. One easy way to do this is to recognize employees on their anniversaries. When and how you celebrate is up to your company, whether it is annually or for milestone anniversaries. The key thing to remember is consistency in the celebrations.

Speaking of celebrations, here are 3 ways to celebrate employee anniversaries:

  1. Acknowledge their commitment. Immediate and upper-level managers should take some time to write a note, stop by an associate’s desk or make a phone call to congratulate and thank the employee for another year of service. Simply acknowledging their significance to the company will help with employee loyalty and engagement. This can be done on a yearly basis.

Cost: a few minutes of your time.

  2. Have some cake. Throw a little party for a milestone anniversary like 5, 10 or 20 years of service. If you have a larger company, make it one party for all milestone anniversaries for that month. Not only will you boost morale, but who doesn’t love a party in his or her honor? Be sure to set clear guidelines on how frequently you will celebrate throughout the year and for which milestones. Be consistent so that jealousy and hurt feelings will not arise.

Cost: approx. $25 - $100 total, depending on the size of your company.

  3. Give a personalized gift. When giving a gift, make sure it is something that shows value to and will be appreciated by the employee. Set up a clear policy on how much to spend for specific milestone anniversary gifts. Items like personalized plaques, logoed fleece jackets, gift certificates to a favorite restaurant and tech gifts are great options for your associates.

Cost: approx. $10 - $150/person, depending on your budget.

An employee’s work anniversary is just as important as a birthday. Taking the time to recognize their years of service will lead to more engaged, loyal employees—employees who feel significant.
