Employee Recognition Ideas

According to Tony Robbins, a key authority on leadership psychology, humans have six needs: certainty, variety, significance, connection/love, growth and contribution. As an employer, it may not be realistic to meet all six needs, but you can and should meet the basic need for significance. An employee’s work anniversary is just as important as a birthday. Taking the time to recognize their years of service will lead to more engaged, loyal employees—employees who feel significant.

Acknowledge Their Commitment. Immediate and/or upper-level managers should take time to write a note, stop by an associate’s desk, or make a phone call to thank the employee for another year of service. Simply acknowledging their importance to the company will help with employee loyalty and engagement.

Throw a Party. Celebrate milestone anniversaries like 5, 10 or 20 years of service. If you are a larger company, you can have one party for all the milestone anniversaries during that month. Having a celebration is a good way to boost employee morale. Be sure to set clear guidelines on which milestones will be celebrated to prevent hurt feelings.

Give a Personalized Gift. When giving a gift, choose something that communicates value and will be appreciated by the employee. Establish a budget policy on how much to spend for specific milestone anniversary gifts. Items like personalized plaques, logoed soft shell jackets, gift certificates to a favorite store, and tech gifts are great options for your associates.
